Discover The Art Of Stitching

My Sewing Journey - Samaria JasminHello, I’m Samaria Jasmin and you are welcome to my website lovelystitching.com. I’m a stitching enthusiast and seamstress. I believe that spending time stitching these fibres makes it more personal, more powerful. We can stitch the stories, our life, passions on these fabrics and all the time spent on it, makes it special and personalised.

Sewing is a fantastic skill I wish everyone knew. Having the greatest seamstress, I have ever known next to me, it was inevitable to learn this skill and eventually acquire one of the best sewing machines the first time.

My grandmother was known throughout the town as the best sewer. People could rely on her for their cloth designs for various occasions. She gained people’s trust that she became the only person to go to for the best cloth designs. Besides, they could bring her their clothes for minor repairs. With a growing workload, my mother, brother, and I could come to her aid.

When my grandmother passed away, we all wanted to inherit one of her sewing machines. In her collection was this old singer sewing machine. The black metal machine with a flimsy thin wood cover was heavy without a handle. This machine had only one foot, used the old-fashioned long bobbins, and sewed straight stitch only. None among us wanted this machine. However, this meant my mother would sacrifice to take the most unpreferred machine so we could have our favorite ones.

My brother had little interest in sewing. However, when it came to inheriting my grandmother’s sewing machines, he went for the latest machine in the collection. This machine had computerized stitches and other advanced features.

My mother and brother’s choice were precisely what I wished for. The remaining machine was a Montgomery Ward model.

The Workhorse Machine

My mother and brother’s choices meant I would take the remaining workhorse machine, the Montgomery Ward model. This was the main machine that my grandmother preferred. The machine was relatively heavy. Besides, everything about the machine was mechanical.

I was happy to have this machine. For me, it symbolized the inheritance of my grandmother’s prowess in sewing. Surprisingly to my family members, I followed in my grandmother’s footsteps. A few years after her demise, I gained people’s trust in offering the best garments, dresses, shirts, and trousers.

With the mechanical Montgomery ward sewing machine, I had to operate everything manually. Oiling was part of the maintenance of this machine. This simple maintenance practice ensured I solved most of the issues connected with the machine’s operation. Despite my tremendous growth and transition, I still use the machine occasionally.

Why Montgomery Ward Was The Best Choice

Before I got the real experience with my grandmother’s Montgomery Ward sewing machine, I could tell a little about it. My choice was entirely out of my perception of my grandmother’s preference in her collection of sewing machines. However, I have learned why my choice was the best in my grandmother’s collection.

One thing worth noting about my first sewing machine is that it was and still is a reliable workhorse. With its metal components and sturdy cases, I am always assured of undertaking my projects smoothly. Its construction is also excellent for quilting and stitching through every fabric. I haven’t encountered a thick fabric that this machine failed to stitch through.

My mother never dived deeper into sewing. The sewing machine she got from my grandmother lies useless in the store. She turned her sewing machine into a monument, but she still shows up occasionally to help me with the consistently heavy workload.

On the other hand, my brother’s computerized machine has faded out. Its once admired high-tech features are no longer relevant compared to the newer advanced models.

The Evolution of My Sewing Empire

When I began having various orders from my customers, I had to acquire accessories for my workhorse machine. Apart from expanding its usability, I have maintained it to date. Cleaning it and oiling it has been my routine. It was only once when I had invited an expert to service it. It was a few days after I acquired it. This was also an excellent opportunity to learn about its interiors and its basics of operation.

In fact, I can now disassemble it, clean it, oil it, and reassemble it without the help of an expert. I like working on it after such routine practice. It always feels like new. I have also understood why my grandmother preferred it over other machines in her collection.

The reason I had to get more machines is the growing demand for my products. I first relied on the various accessories to cater to various projects, but I realized I needed more than that. Sometimes I need to reread my mechanical machine, which wastes a lot of time.

I first acquired a modern machine with most features being automatic. This machine helped me between projects when I found little hiccups with my Montgomery Ward model. Nevertheless, my Montgomery machine still remains my main machine of operation.

Later, I purchased more machines for quilting, decoration, embroidery, and overlock, among others. My love for sewing is evident that I am influencing more young people in my town into the sewing profession.

With a collection of sewing machines, I have secured the services of the best sewers in my town. They are integral in producing amazing cloth designs that we sell in our physical store.

It’s been 20 years now since I received the Montgomery Ward model from my grandmother, and it is still in good condition. Like most vintage machines you will find today, the machine is sturdy and durable. Perhaps this machine will last to eternity!

A New World of Possibilities

I never imagined my first sewing machine could be the beginning of greater achievements. Apart from controlling the biggest clothing store in my town, I also try to use my skills to better other people’s lives. Every year, we donate several pieces of clothing to needy children in town and through the outskirts of the town.

Besides, I have begun a program offering sewing lessons to those interested. I am planning to acquire more sewing machines for training. I also hope to absorb some of my learners in my sewing store. In addition, I’ve started to spread my sewing knowledge and experience of using different types of sewing machines online via lovelystitching.com.
